Obituary of Eric Unger

Obituary It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Eric Unger, March 28th, 2018, at the age of 91. Loving husband of Laurette (née Rousseau). Beloved father of Donald (Jeanne), Susan (Barry), Diane (John), Alice (Patrick) and Andrew (Debbie) . He is survived by his brother, Walter (Laura). He will be sadly missed by 5 grandchildren, Alex, Eric, Gregory, A.J, Amber, great-grandchildren Harmonie, Carson, Preston, Katie and Graham. Predeceased by his parents Jacob and Hilda (née Wise), his first wife June (née Maclellan), son David, grandson Aaron, his sisters Hilda, Hertha, and Edna, brothers Bert and Bill. Eric was one of the best Hockey Players Welland had ever seen. He played on the 1954 WHC,in Stockholm Sweden where they won the Silver Medal. At the age of 17 he was scouted by the Toronto Maple Leafs and invited to their training camp. He played for the St. Catharines Junior "A" Falcons and later turned professional. He played in the Amercian, United States and Pacific Coast Hockey Leagues. Eric came to Welland as a playing coach and anchored Welland's senior and intermediate teams for many years. While playing for the Welland Warriors he scored 8 hat tricks with 6 of them in consecutive games. Eric was affectionately known as "Shaky" by his teammates. Eric was the proud owner of the Kingsley Tavern in Welland for many years. He was also New York Yankees biggest fan. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to WELLAND FUNERAL HOME. In accordance with Eric's wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Parish Community of St. Kevin 303 Niagara St, Welland, on Saturday, April 7th, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Thorold. As an expression of sympathy, donations to Parish Community of St. Kevin and Alzheimer's Association will be appreciated by the family.
