Obituary of Gabriel Gallant
It is with great sadness that the family of Gabe announce his passing at his home
surrounded by his family, On July 2nd 2016 at the age of 95. Beloved husband of
Justine Gallant for 65 years, Cherished father of Paul (Ninetta) and Marc (Lina).
Adored grandpa of Jason (Sheri) Andrew (Ali), Blake (Lindsey), Craig, Jessica and
Madison, Great grandfather of Davina, Malcolm, Sophia and Cole.
Survived by his sisters and brothers: Marguerite (Antonin Bouchard), Anne Marie
(Paul Arseneault), Lucien (Claudette), Evangeline (Conrad Fortier), Anastasie
(Robert Levesque), Gerard (Linda Strong), Pauline (Robert Menard), Francois
(Claudette) and Delphis (Diane) all of Quebec. He will be missed by many nieces,
nephews. Gabe was predeceased by two children Andre and Marcel of Welland,
Sister Therese Smith of Arizona, Sister Juliette, Brother Louis, Brother Roland
Giroux all of Quebec, his father and mother Jean and Rose (De Lima Gaudreau).
He was born in St. Alexis Matapedia co. Bonaventure in 1920. He joined the army
in 1942 for World War 11 and was sent overseas where he became a member of
the army service corps, stationed in England. He took part in the invasion of
Normandy in 1944 and remained there until 1946. Upon his return home he went
to school in Moncton New Brunswick to learn the art of barbering. He came to
Welland in 1947 where he met his love in 1950 and married in 1951. He set up
shop on King St. then moved to Main St where he worked for the next 55 years in
his trade. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4 since 1947,
one of the founders of the True Sports Hunt Club, a member of the Caisse
Populaire since 1947, a life member of the Knights of Columbus, President of the
French Canadian Business Association 1961-1962.
He returned to Normandy with his wife Justine for the 50th anniversary of the
Invasion in 1994.
His passions were fishing, hunting, his garden, and his dart games on Wednesday
at the Legion but most of all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral Details
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Welland Funeral Home 827
East Main St. Welland , on Wednesday from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. The funeral
service will be held at 11am in Eglise Sacre Coeur on Thursday. Vigil prayer for
Gabriel will be celebrated Wednesday evening at 8pm. the Royal Canadian Legion
will have a service at 7:30 on Wednesday. Interment will follow in Holy Cross
Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy donations can be made to the Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 4
