Obituary of Gilles Montpetit

With saddened hearts the family of Gilles Montpetit announces his passing on April 29th, 2015 at the Welland General Hospital at the age of 90. Beloved Husband of the late Jeannette (Houle) 1983. Dear father to Roger (Suzanne), Raymond and Louise (Jean Marc) Marquis. Gilles will be greatly missed my his grandchildren Larry, Kevin, Phil, Kim, Chad, Nicole and Isiah and 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Dear brother of Guy (Aline), Agathe Cécire, Réjeanne Deschamps and Carmen Brazeau. Predeceased by his parents Flore and Orphir Montpetit, his brother Fernand and sisters Gertrude and Thérèse. Gilles enjoyed golfing and fishing. Gilles was born in Beauharnois, Québec and came to Welland in 1945 and worked at the Union Carbide as a crane and furnace operator and a (lead in) or gang leader before working for the city. Gilles started working for the city in 1950. After 9 years as an equipment operator, he was offered the job of superintendent. There were 17 workers in the works department, but when the city annexed Crowland in 1960, that number jumped to 30. In 1966, Gilles was named president of the Welland County Roads Superintendents Association, and in 1967-68 was secretary-treasurer of the Ontario Municipal Equipment Association. In 1982, Gilles was president of the Niagara Regional Roads Superintends Association. Funeral Details The family will receive relatives and friends at the Welland Funeral Home 827 East Main Street Welland on Sunday, May 3rd from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday May 4th at 11 a.m. at Église Sacré Coeur. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations by cheque to the Canadian Cancer Society will be greatly appreciated by the family.
