Obituary of Rejean Vocal

Just before sunrise on Tuesday August 24th, 2021, at just the time he might have left to go fishing, Réjean Vocal found eternal rest. 

Reg was never one to sit still for very long. Always up for a challenge, he lived an above-average number of adventures since his birth in St.Camille, QC in 1944.  Depending on when you crossed paths with Reg, you might have known him, among other things, to be hauling logs in the Quebec wilderness, doing mechanic work at his brother’s garage, running his bar in Daquaam, as a foreman for the Ironworkers building the SkyDome, travelling around Canada and Europe with Raymonde, or keeping the home and restaurant appliance infrastructure of Welland and Port Colborne in proper working order. 

Reg loved fly-fishing for brook trout in Quebec with his brother-in-law, hunting for moose in northern Ontario with his dear friends and watching hockey games on tv with his cat on his lap. He was always on the lookout for a good steak to BBQ. His grand-children looked forward to Grand-Papa’s crêpes for breakfast and his famous roast beef for dinners, all of which were prepared while singing or whistling. Few were the desserts that Reg felt could not be improved by a little (or a lot) of cream and maple syrup. No pasta though! He claimed he had eaten enough to last a lifetime when in Italy with his father the year he turned 21. He loved to garden. He loved to talk with friends, and he loved to tell stories. In the last months, he especially enjoyed sitting in the backyard on the beautiful deck that he planned and built, surrounded by his family, reminiscing, laughing, crying, and appreciating to the fullest the last bit of time they had together. 

Through his illness, his faith carried him. He was very courageous to the end and kept the fast smile and easy laugh for which he was so well known. As a family, we wish to express our gratitude for the support we received from our family, friends and neighbours and also the St. Elizabeth nurses. We are forever indebted to family members Jean-Michel and Mélanie for traveling so far and for devoting their expertise and compassion to him in his final days. They were such a comfort to us.

He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. 

Réjean now joins his parents Constant and Adèla (Guenard) Vocal and his siblings Ovilas, Mariette, Yvon, Francis and Luigia. He leaves behind his loving wife, Raymonde Masson, and 3 children: Gino, Mariane (Tom) and Nicolas (Coreen), and 6 grand-children: Tristan, Céleste, Édeline, Emily, Sophie and Aubrey. He is survived by siblings Vince, Réjeanne and Armelle, many loving nieces and nephews, and so, so, so many dear friends and acquaintances whom we wish we could all name and who have stood by our side in this difficult time.

Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Reg’s life at the Auberge - Club Richelieu at 565 River Rd. in Welland on September 4th, 2021 from 1 - 4pm with a special tribute at 3pm. Lunch will be provided. A religious service will be held in Quebec at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada would be appreciated.

Réjean Vocal a trouvé le repos éternel juste avant le lever du soleil le mardi 24 août 2021, l’heure a laquelle il se préparait normalement pour la pêche.

Réjean n'était pas du genre à rester assis tranquille. Toujours prêt à relever un défi, il a vécu un grand nombre d'aventures depuis sa naissance à Saint Camille, QC, en 1944. Selon le moment où vous l’avez connu, il aurait pu être en train de transporter des billots de bois dans les forêts du Québec, de faire des travaux de mécanique au garage de son frère, de tenir son bar à Daquaam, d'être contremaître pour les Ironworkers qui construisaient le SkyDome, de voyager au Canada et en Europe avec Raymonde, ou de maintenir en bon état de marche l'infrastructure des appareils ménagers de Welland et de Port Colborne.

Réjean aimait pêcher la truite à la mouche au Québec avec son beau-frère, chasser l'orignal dans le nord de l'Ontario avec ses chers amis et regarder les matchs de hockey à la télévision avec son chat sur les genoux. Il était toujours à la recherche d'un bon steak à griller au barbecue. Ses petits-enfants attendaient avec impatience les crêpes de Grand-Papa pour le petit-déjeuner et son fameux rôti de bœuf pour le souper, tous ces repas préparés en chantant ou en sifflant. Rares étaient les desserts qui, selon Réjean, ne pouvaient être améliorés par un peu (ou beaucoup) de crème et de sirop d'érable. Mais pas de pâtes ! Il prétendait en avoir mangé suffisamment pour toute une vie lorsqu'il était en Italie avec son père l'année de ses 21 ans. Il aimait jardiner. Il aimait parler avec ses amis, et il aimait raconter des histoires. Au cours des derniers mois, il aimait particulièrement s'asseoir dans la cour arrière, sur la belle terrasse qu'il avait planifiée et construite, entouré de sa famille, se remémorant des souvenirs, riant, pleurant et appréciant au maximum les derniers moments qu'ils avaient ensemble.

Tout au long de sa maladie, sa foi l'a porté. Il a été très courageux jusqu'à la fin et a gardé son sourire et son rire contagieux pour lesquels il était si bien connu. En tant que famille, nous souhaitons exprimer notre gratitude pour le soutien que nous avons reçu de notre famille, de nos amis et de nos voisins, ainsi que les infirmières de St. Elizabeth. Nous serons à jamais redevables à Jean-Michel et Mélanie, d'avoir voyagé si loin et de lui avoir consacré leur expertise et leur compassion dans ses derniers jours. Ils ont été d'un grand réconfort pour nous.

Il est mort paisiblement à la maison, entouré de sa famille.

Réjean rejoint maintenant ses parents Constant et Adèla (Guenard) Vocal et ses frères et sœurs Ovilas, Mariette, Yvon, Francis et Luigia. Il laisse derrière lui son épouse, Raymonde Masson, ses 3 enfants : Gino, Mariane (Tom) et Nicolas (Coreen), et 6 petits-enfants : Tristan, Céleste, Édeline, Emily, Sophie et Aubrey. Il laisse dans le deuil son frère Vince et ses sœurs Réjeanne et Armelle, de nombreux neveux et nièces bien-aimés, et tant de chers amis et de connaissances que nous aimerions tous pouvoir nommer et qui nous ont soutenus dans ces moments difficiles.

Les amis et la famille sont invités à assister à une célébration de la vie de Réjean à l'Auberge - Club Richelieu au 565 River Rd. à Welland le 4 septembre 2021 de 13h à 16h avec un hommage spécial à 15h. Le dîner sera fourni. Un service religieux aura lieu plus tard au Québec. Au lieu de fleurs, des dons à « Conservation de la nature Canada » seraient appréciés.
