GERVAIS – Armand Laurier 1931 - 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Dad, Armand Laurier Gervais on Sunday July 31st, 2022 at the Welland Hospital at the age of 91. His family was blessed to be by his side. Dear husband of the late Florianne (Seguin) Gervais. Loving father of Dr. Normand Gervais (Amanda) and Roger Gervais (Vickie). He will be fondly remembered by his four grandsons Danniel (Destanee), Joshua (Alexandra), Noah and Nicholas as well Amanda’s daughter Stefanie who lovingly called him Pepère. He will be missed by his great grandchildren Maxton, Logan and Henley. Armand is survived by his brother Hermas Gervais and his wife Thérèse as well as several brothers and sisters in law. He was the dear “Mon Oncle” of many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Omer and Nellie Gervais, his three brothers Aurel, Marcel and John, his 6 sisters Aurore, Helene, Emma, Cecile, Gabrielle and Mathilda.
Armand was born in Warren, Ontario in 1931. As a young boy he worked at a sawmill in Markstay, Ontario. He came to Welland in 1947 at the young age of 16 and worked as a pipefitter at the International Nickel Company for 18 years. His entrepreneurial spirit lead him and his wife Florianne to open and operate a restaurant “Armand’s Tasty Freeze” on Lincoln Street in Welland, for 10 years. They sold the restaurant and built the Welland Funeral Home at 827 East Main Street in 1966. Armand went to school to complete his secondary school certificate and then on to Humber College where he earned his Funeral Director License in 1972. He proudly served many families in our community during his career as a Funeral Director before he retired in in 2006 at the age of 75. Armand enjoyed giving back to his community. He was a proud founding member of the Club Richelieu of Welland in 1957 and served as the president of the Club in 1976. He was also involved in the campaign to raise funds to build the new Eglise Sacre Coeur on Empire Street in Welland. He was a devout Catholic and attended church services every Sunday for many years. He was the director of the Caisse Populaire Desjardins in Welland and the president of the French Businessmen’s Association in 1968.
We will always remember him as a hard working, honest and humble man who loved his family. We lovingly called him “Boss”. His grandkids adored him and loved to listen to the many interesting stories he would share about his childhood and younger years. He was most certainly the strongest man we have ever known and we are so grateful that he was our dad.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the amazing paramedics who stayed with dad at the hospital until we were permitted to be with him. To Karen and all of the incredible staff in the Emergency Department at the Welland Hospital who tended to our every need and went above and beyond for us, and to Brian and Gabby and all of the staff on the 4th floor for their compassion and kindness and their excellent care during such an emotional time. You are all so appreciated.
The Gervais family will receive family and friends at the WELLAND FUNERAL HOME , CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE, 827 East Main Street, Welland on Wednesday August 3rd from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service will be held at Eglise du Sacre Coeur on Thursday August 4th at 11am. Internment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery. If desired, donations to Eglise Sacre Coeur or the Fonds Foyer Richelieu would be appreciated by the family.

C'est avec une grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès paisible de notre père, Armand Laurier Gervais, le dimanche 31 juillet 2022 à l'hôpital Welland à l'âge de 91 ans. Sa famille a eu la chance d'être à son côtés. Cher époux de feu Florianne (Seguin) Gervais. Père bien-aimé de Dr Normand Gervais (Amanda) et Roger Gervais (Vickie). Il se souviendra affectueusement de ses quatre petits-fils Danniel (Destanee), Joshua (Alexandra), Noah et Nicholas ainsi que de la fille d'Amanda, Stefanie, qui l'appelait avec amour Pepère. Il manquera à ses arrière-petits-enfants Maxton, Logan et Henley. Armand laisse dans le deuil son frère Hermas Gervais et son épouse Thérèse ainsi que plusieurs beaux-frères et belles-sœurs. Il était le cher « Mon Oncle » de plusieurs nièces et neveux. Il a été précédé par ses parents Omer et Nellie Gervais, ses trois frères Aurel, Marcel et John, ses 6 soeurs Aurore, Hélène, Emma, Cécile, Gabrielle et Mathilda.
Armand est né à Warren, en Ontario, en 1931. Jeune garçon, il a travaillé dans une scierie à Markstay, en Ontario. Il est arrivé à Welland en 1947 à l'âge de 16 ans et a travaillé comme tuyauteur à l'International Nickel Company pendant 18 ans. Son esprit d'entreprise l'a amené, avec sa femme Florianne, à ouvrir et à exploiter un restaurant "Armand's Tasty Freeze" sur la rue Lincoln à Welland, pendant 10 ans. Ils ont vendu le restaurant et ont construit la maison funéraire Welland au 827, rue Main Est en 1966. Armand est allé à l'école pour terminer son certificat d'études secondaires, puis au Humber College où il a obtenu sa licence de directeur de funérailles en 1972. Il a fièrement servi de nombreuses familles dans notre communauté au cours de sa carrière de directeur de funérailles avant de prendre sa retraite en 2006 à l'âge de 75 ans. Armand aimait redonner à sa communauté. Il était un fier membre fondateur du Club Richelieu de Welland en 1957 et a été président du Club en 1976. Il a également participé à la campagne de financement pour la construction de la nouvelle Église Sacré-Cœur sur la rue Empire à Welland. Il était un fervent catholique et a assisté à des services religieux tous les dimanches pendant de nombreuses années. Il a été directeur de la Caisse populaire Desjardins de Welland et président de l'Association des hommes d'affaires français en 1968.
Nous nous souviendrons toujours de lui comme d'un homme travailleur, honnête et humble qui aimait sa famille. Nous l'appelions affectueusement "Boss". Ses petits-enfants l'adoraient et aimaient écouter les nombreuses histoires intéressantes qu'il partageait sur son enfance et ses jeunes années. Il était certainement l'homme le plus fort que nous ayons jamais connu et nous sommes très reconnaissants qu'il soit notre père.
Nous tenons à remercier sincèrement les incroyables ambulanciers paramédicaux qui sont restés avec papa à l'hôpital jusqu'à ce que nous soyons autorisés à être avec lui. À Karen et à tout le personnel incroyable du service des urgences de l'hôpital Welland qui s'est occupé de tous nos besoins et s'est surpassé pour nous, et à Brian et Gabby et à tout le personnel du 4e étage pour leur compassion et leur gentillesse et leurs excellents soins pendant une période aussi émouvante. Vous êtes tous tellement appréciés.
La famille Gervais recevra parents et amis au SALON FUNÉRAIRE, CENTRE DE CRÉMATION ET DE RÉCEPTION WELLAND, 827, rue Main Est, Welland le mercredi 3 août de 14h à 16h et de 18h à 20h. Les funérailles auront lieu à l'église du Sacré Coeur le jeudi 4 août à 11h. L'inhumation aura lieu au cimetière de Woodlawn. Si désiré, des dons à l'Église Sacré-Cœur ou au Fonds Foyer Richelieu seraient appréciés par la famille.
